The Gospel of Jesus Christ helps us to see the vital link between racial reconciliation and the work of orphan care. We lived as strangers, alienated from God because of our sin and Jesus in his grace pursued us at infinite cost to himself. Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” Through Jesus’ self-emptying God reconciles us to himself and adopts us as his children.
Those who have been reconciled to God and enjoy the privileges of being his children possess great motivation to work for both racial reconciliation and orphan care. We know not only the pain of a fatherless life and the strain of alienation, but also the joy of reconciliation and the thrill of being children of our heavenly Father. This experience should drive believers to care for the orphan and to work to see men and women made in God’s image be reconciled to each other. This work is not the Gospel, but it is a natural extension of the Gospel’s work.
The example of Christ in his life on earth also compels us to seek the good of all peoples no matter their race or status.
