OUR

STORY

“Every child deserves a home.” That’s the simple sentence that started all of this. Know More Orphans began as a small group of like-minded believers who felt called to apply that single idea to the global orphan crisis. We started the only way we knew how: at the individual level, with a single family pursuing an international adoption. However, we quickly realized that international adoption alone cannot solve this problem: only 9,000 international adoptions occur each year.

That first simple sentence soon led to another simple realization: God’s intended vehicle for caring for orphans has always been the church. We always knew that local churches would be the backbone of anything we would accomplish, and our goal is to connect the resources of churches here with the needs of churches there on the ground, so that both bodies can share in this crucial work.

OUR

MISSION

We are going to change the world for as many children as we possibly can. Know More Orphans is a non-profit ministry that seeks to fundamentally alter the lives of orphans and vulnerable children by fostering systemic, gospel-centered change within their culture.

It’s impossible to meet a need until you name it. Naming the need puts edges on it, keeping us from being overwhelmed. Naming the need also narrows our focus, keeping our attention from wandering. Know More Orphans exists to meet one basic need: to foster systemic, gospel-centered change that will fundamentally improve the lives of orphans worldwide.

We’re going to start by changing the lives of the 32,000 orphans in Haiti. The lessons we learn in Haiti each day, and the networks we develop, will become scalable protocols and systems that will soon be used to impact more of the 153 million orphans across the globe.

There is always more to be done. Too often, churches and religious organizations have placed a primary focus on short-term work, swooping in for a frenzied week of “ministry” and then vanishing.

Know More Orphans will always be intentionally biased toward long-term, systemic change. Our purpose is not to merely make orphans feel better; it is to help orphans live better, addressing structural deficiencies so that successive generations are better able to care for their children.

In a powerful image, God defines Himself in Deuteronomy as the “defender of the fatherless.” The assumption that undergirds everything we do is not complex, but it is challenging: if God defends orphans, then His image-bearers must be called to do so as well.

Our purpose is to stand as a global advocate for 150 million orphans, becoming a voice for the voiceless and a help for the helpless. We believe that systems are better than short-term solutions; rather than applying short-term band-aids, we are committed to effecting structural cultural changes that will reduce the number of orphans and improve the lot of remaining orphans from generation to generation.
